Markeya Thomas

Communications Associate

Markeya Thomas is a Chicago-based strategic communications leader and narrative strategist with over a decade of experience at the intersection of climate, racial justice, and community power. From her early work as a broadcast journalist to leading a $10 million Black voter engagement program at Climate Power, Markeya has built a career around using story to shift minds, move people, and change policy.

She has shaped climate narratives for some of the movement's most influential organizations, including Climate Nexus, the Sunrise Project, Climate Cabinet, and Building Equity & Alignment, developing media strategies that center environmental justice, financial risk, and the lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. Her work has earned placements in the New York Times and other major outlets, and she has collaborated with artists and celebrities to bring climate stories to broader audiences.

Markeya's approach is community-centered and equity-driven. She believes the climate movement wins when it speaks directly to the people most harmed by environmental injustice and builds the organizational power to back it up. Today, she serves as a communications consultant for Our Bodies, Our Mississippi, helping reproductive freedom advocates build cohesive narratives heading into the 2026 midterm cycle.

A graduate of Georgia State University and currently pursuing her Master's in Organizational Development and PR at Wayne State College, Markeya leads with the conviction that narrative strategy is one of the most powerful tools for systems change.
