Communities of Practice
Facilitating peer learning, collaboration, and solidarity with leaders addressing climate displacement in their communities.
Grassroots Leader Community of Practice
In 2021, the Climigration Network partnered with the Anthropocene Alliance to convene leaders from grassroots organizations across the country responding to climate change in the context of inequality, racism, toxic pollution, and political and cultural divides in their communities.
Together, the group has shared learnings and experiences from their communities’ efforts to respond to the climate crisis, created the Great American Climate Migration Statement, established group commitments and a Memorandum of Understanding to guide how we engage together, and helped guide the development of the Climigration Network.
Currently, the Community of Practice is designing and leading innovative participatory research to generate trauma coping and healing resources for fellow grassroots climate leaders. This research is being developed in a partnership led by David Southgate, Camille Hadley and members of the Climigration Network Grassroots Leader Community of Practice with support from Climigration Network staff and Buy-In Community Planning.
Indigenous Leader Community of Practice
In 2021, the Climigration Network partnered with the Alaska Institute for Justice and the Lowlander Center in coastal Louisiana to convene Indigenous leaders responding to the worsening climate crisis through adaptation-in-place, site expansion, and resettlement.
Together, the group has shared learnings and experiences from their communities’ efforts to respond to the climate crisis, designed and led storytelling efforts in their communities, designed and hosted a roundtable with funders and partners, presented to philanthropic funders on best practices for partnering with Indigenous communities, and helped guide the development of the Climigration Network.
Currently, the Community of Practice is focusing on knowledge-sharing, navigating the funding landscape and shifting federal administration, and exploring approaches for Land Back and rematriation of land that reinforce Tribal sovereignty and support adaptation.
